Famous Last Words

It has been a pretty crazy semester but I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. After this blog post I will be done with my first class of the semester. There's no better way than to end it with a famous last words post!

Right now I am enrolled in 4 classes including this one. This semester has been one of my hardest so far but I am almost done. There was a time earlier in the semester when I doubted whether or not I could pass a certain class but at this point I need a 60 on the final to pass. The grades I'm getting this semester aren't not great. However, I will have knocked out one of the hardest classes in my degree so I am fine with it. I am looking forward to summer so I can finally have a moment to sit back and relax for more than a few hours.

My plans this summer are to take a summer class and work a lot. The class I will be taking is astronomy. The reason I chose this class is because I want to continue playing pokemon go at night. What better way to play than to play while I star gaze for my astronomy class? Also, if anybody here wants to find me I'll be at the huff playing basketball 2-3 times a week over the summer. It's what my friends and I do when we have time and it's really fun.

Tech Tip: Weather Widget

Didn't know these tech tips were so easy to complete! I added a weather widget and it only took me about 10 minutes. Right now I'm scrapping to get enough points to get an A in the class. I wish I took the time earlier in the semester do some of these tech tips. Not only are they free points, they show you some valuable tools on how make your blog even more unique.

Epics of India Improvements

I myself enjoyed this class and don't really see any place there needs improvements. However I do like the idea of adding some creative writing tutorials for students to watch. Sometimes it's hard to sit down and read about how your writing is wrong. But if there was a visual example you could see with a voice explaining it I feel like it would stick to the student better. I do not like the idea of changing the review week to a planning week though. It was nice to have a week to take a step back from the class and actually see what you've accomplished up to that point in the semester. If you changed it to a planning week then you wouldn't have the same time to take a step back to see what you've done.
Overall, this class is great and I don't think there is any place that needs improvements.

Week 14 Storytelling: The Jewel of Power (Part 3)

Author's Note: This is part three to my story about how Ashwatthaman got the jewel in his head. In part one Ashwatthaman was found unconscious against a tree after being gone for two months with a mysterious stone in his head. He had no memory of anything but after time it came back. In part two Ashwatthaman has all his memories back and tells his father what happened. Basically what happened is he was lured to a mysterious cave and someone or something placed the stone in his head. The purpose of this part three is to highlight some of Ashwatthaman's strange encounters in the cave where he was trapped for two months.

It seems that I have been in this cave forever. I am confident that I have checked every inch of this cave but there is just no way out. There seems to be something special about this stone in my head. The only food I've had since I've been trapped in here is a few bugs that I found scurrying across the floor. Yet for some reason I no longer desire food or water. When I first got trapped in this Hell I worried that I would die after a few days, but here I am alive and well.

If anything I feel as if I am in a dream. Things keep happening to me that logically do not make any sense. In the world I came from and remember, flesh isn't tougher than rocks. But in here, if I trip and fall on a pointy rock my body just crushes it under me. I cannot die. I do not not hunger and do not feel pain. Is this the doing of the man who stuck the stone in my head? Is there some sort of magical property about this stone that turns whoever has it immortal? If not I can't explain anything that has happened to me while stuck in this cave. I don't remember anyone lasting as long as I have without any nourishment. I do not remember anyone whose flesh was stronger than rocks that come up from the ground like swords waiting to pierce an unexpected visitor.

The longer I live in this cave the more I believe I am actually in Hell. I am surrounded by earth on all sides. There is no way out. If it wasn't for the lava pit illuminating the cave I would have already gone insane from the sheer darkness. Each time I wake up I have new thoughts about the lava pit. New terrible thoughts that are corrupting my soul. This morning when I awoke I made my decision that this would be my last day in this here cave. I have been in here far to long. Is this a dream? If it is then I will wake up from this nightmare once I put my plan into effect.

I have made up my mind and there is nothing that will change my mind. I am going to try one last time to escape this place but if I have no luck then I am getting out of here no matter what. Even if it means potentially taking my own life. There is a perfectly good lava pit waiting for me to jump into it. Out of everywhere in this cave the lava pit is the one place I have yet to explore. I do not know if the lave will actually kill me or if my flesh is strong enough. There is only one way to find out.

It has been long enough. I am getting out of this cave one way or another. I pray to the creators that I will survive the plunge into the lava pit. If not then maybe I will discover the reason why I was placed in this prison in the next live. Goodbye world, my only regret is not spending more time with my father. I trained day and night to please him. I knew Arjuna was his favorite but that is what motivated me to train so hard.

Ashwatthaman shut his eyes and fell into the lava pit. It is still unknown what really happened to him because the next time he opened his eyes he was back home surrounded by people he didn't recognize. He was laying against a tree near his house with the stone still in his head. Meaning everything that happened in that cave really happened to him and he wasn't in a dream. His father found him and woke him up to find out that his son had no memories of anything. Ashwatthaman was terrified and couldn't even recognize his own father.

Author's note: This is the final installment of the Ashwatthaman stories. I didn't have much time this week to write this story so there might be typos/no pics. If anyone comes to this story before Friday I would like to apologize. I need to spend my time working on a project due that day and studying for my last midterm. I hope you enjoy the story!

Reading Notes: Devdutt Pattanaik Videos, Part F: Vishnu's Secret

Cows are the most sacred animal in the hindu faith. They are not allowed to eat beef. Some wonder if cows produce milk for humans or for their calf's. People must treat cows with respect because they provide so much for humans. Vishnu is known as the preserver and everyone is expected to respect cows because Vishnu does.

(Vishnu.
Source: Web)

Dharma is what creates a stable society by domesticating the animal within man. Vishnu also represents organization. The mission of life is to survive through strength or cunning.
Vishnu is called the lord of maya meaning measurement. He judges whether what you do is good or bad. What is good is love, caring, and affection for others. While what is bad is everything else.

Rama is the most revered avatar of Vishnu. He is a king that leads by example and follows the laws set before him. Ravana is the complete opposite of Rama. He believes in using power to take what he wants while Rama follows laws even though he has power.
Krishna is another popular avatar of Vishnu.

Reading Notes: Devdutt Pattanaik Videos, Part E: Devi's Secret

Kanyakumari wanted to marry Shiva. When Shiva was on his way to marry this goddess the sun rose so he went back home. Kanyakumari was upset that Shiva didn't show up so she cried and it is believed that the sands in the southern area of India are multicolored because this is where she cried(She cried with makeup on).

Lakshmi is the embodiment of the earths wealth and bounty. She is depicted in a pot because back then people use to put valuable things in pots.

Kama is the god of desire.

These Devdutt Pattanaik videos are getting really confusing, This part is titled Devi's secret but I have yet to figure out who this Devi person is or what it means. What I do know though is that this video mainly focused on the idea of desire. It is believed that desire is the reason we are all alive to this day. The creator had a desire to create us.

Reading Notes: Devdutt Pattanaik Videos, Part D: Shiva's Secret

Shiva is known as the destroyer. He is calm and and composed yet does not really seem like a destroyer. Shiva destroys the one who provokes desire. Shiva's trident represents the self.
The way Shiva destroys is by closing his eyes and not observing what's going on around him. Shiva keeps his eyes shut because he doesn't care about the material world.

Shiva cares for Sati and only acts irrationally when she is in trouble.
Parvati is the one who is married to Shiva.
Shiva is the source of all potency.
The left side is the material world while the right is the spiritual world.

Week 13 Story Planning: What're the rules to the famous "Dice Game"

The gambling match with dice is about to start and it will be interesting to see how different it is in a film rather than in text. The text didn't really explain how the game was played but now I will get to see how the game is actually played.

All of the sons of Dhritarashtra enter the room where the dice game will be held. It seems like a very formal occasion for all to be entertained by. Yudhishthira is getting in over his head and gambling everything he owns. He knows this man is a known cheater but he still plays. Why would his brothers sit by and let him do all this gambling?

After the dice game it is still unsure how this game is played and what the rules are.
(A dice with odd symbols.
Source: Web)

The above are some of the notes I took while watching a film the professor suggested me to watch about the Mahabharata. I'm doing a story planning post because I just do not enough time to write a good story. But for my story next week I want to do something involving the dice game in the Mahabharata. The story I'm thinking of would involve the a few Gods sitting down bored out of their minds and creating the rules for this game. The reason I would like to do this is because in the film version and the book version you never really know what the rules are to the dice game. You just know that Yudhishthira loses everything in seemingly 7 rolls of the a die(is that singular for dice?).

Reading Notes: The Mahabharata Movie: Part E

With the battle in full swing Duryodana is trying to blame Bhishma for their woes. He thinks Bhishma is going easy on Arjuna and Karna even comes up to say he will lead the battle. Bhishma is famed to be a great master of battle for he is a stranger to death.

Amba is finally fulfilling her role in killing Bhishma. But it ended up being Arjuna's arrow that pierced his flesh. Bhishma gave his life to that the pandu brothers would have a better chance against him since he couldn't die.

Karna is one of the most understood characters in the entire Mahabharata.  In the readings he seemd like a tough man who was ready to conquer to world. While in this film you can see the emotion that he experiences with each passing scene. You can tell he is truely hurting that he has to fight against his mother and brothers. His only excuse is that duryodanha was there for him when his mother gave him away. All he ever wanted was to have a loving mother but his upbringing filled him with such hatred. And finding out about his true heritage has complicated his life even more. He wants to return to his family but since he vowed to kill Arjuna he wants to take him out first.

Reading Notes: The Mahabharata Movie: Part D

Watching this 5 hour film has helped me to better understand the Mahabharata. Right now in the film the 5 brothers are spending their last year in exile and have to disguise themselves as people who will never be recognized. Yudishthira is now a master at dice, Bhima is a master of pots, while Arjuna is seemingly a female in a mans body. I get the twins confused but one is disguised as a great musician. One of Duryodanas generals comes to the camp where the brothers are hiding and they give them suggestions where to find the pandava brothers. The general has suspicions they are the pandu brothers but when he learns Yudishthira doesn't lose at dice he knows its not them.

The general wants draupadi to come visit him and he tries to rape her. She immediately runs to Bhima in fear. Bhima lays under a cover and the general thinks it's her. He ends up easily killing him by crushing him with his arms.

The 13 year exile is over and the true game of thrones is about to begin. Yudishthira is going to get an army ready to battle for what is his.

Arjuna and Duryodanha seek out Krishna to help with their side of the army. Arjuna gets the first choice. He can either have a massive fully equipped army or Krishna himself who won't fight. Arjuna chooses Krishna to drive his chariot.

Krishna seeks peace one last time but Durodana tries to kill him anyways.
Krishna tells Karna that he is the son of Kunti. He doesn't care and vows to kill Arjuna anyways.
(Krishna in this film.

I didn't realize how big of a role krishna played in this story. He is a huge peace keeper but everyone seems to want to fight regardless of all the knowledge he keeps preaching.

Reading Notes: The Mahabharata Movie: Part C

Exile in the forest
Amba seeks out Bhima to kill Bhishma. Bhima declines and Amba proceeds on her way.

Arjuna leaves his brothers and heads into the forest to go find weapons. He is now on his own journey. At the same time Duryodana is back in the kingdom plotting ways he can get away with killing the Pandava brothers.

While Bhishma is on duty for the night watch he encounters a rakshisa named Hidimbi. She instantly falls in love with him and takes on a human form. She wants to marry him and is confused why his current wife has 5 husbands. While the two are talking Hidimbi's brother attacks and a fairly epic battle ensues. It was surprisingly good and I am ready for the war to come towards the end of the film.

Hidimbi ends up getting her way and Bhima is allowed to be her husband. The two have a son seemingly out of nowhere. Hidimbi is flying Bhima around and suddenly the son just randomly appears.

When Hidimbi and the son flees, Duryodana and his goons sneak up on them with sword. Vyasa seems to be some some great god or something. He randomly appears when the pandu brothers are in trouble and need help.

While Arjuna is out in the mountains he runs into Shiva. Before he finds out who he is though he fires about 4 arrows at him. Shiva grants one request to Arjuna and he asks for the weapon Shiva wields.

The last few scenes have been really confusing and I have no clue what is going on.

Reading Notes: The Mahabharata Movie: Part B

It being about 5 days since I have watched this film I have kind of forgotten some of the characters. But the game of thrones theme is starting. All the sons seem to want to be on the throne. Dhritarashtra wants to stay loyal to his brother who let him be king by letting his brothers children take the throne. But as the sons of the king Duryodana is trying to plot to get the kingdom.

(Dice game.

The gambling match with dice is about to start and it will be interesting to see how different it is in a film rather than in text. The text didn't really explain how the game was played but now I will get to see how the game is actually played.

After the dice game it is still unsure how this game is played and what the rules are.

Draupadi is given two requests and she wants all her husbands to be freed. Upon their departure they are told to come back and try to play one last game. Yudhishthira plays saying that it is their salvation, and vishnu will punish them if they are truly cheating. He ends up losing again and is banished for 12 years and an additional 1 year in disguise.

Week 11 Storytelling: The Jewel of Power (Part 2)

Author's Note:This is part two to how Ashwatthaman got the jewel in his head. The jewel that is embedded in his head pretty much makes him immortal. It gives him power, makes him invulnerable to weapons, and he can live without food and water. In part one Ashwatthaman is found sleeping against a tree after being gone for two moon cycles (two months). When he is found he has no memory of what happened and spends the next years of his life having nightmares of his dreadful time in the cave. This story starts three years after he remembers everything and tells his dad what happened to him in the cave.

I begin my story. "On the night of my disappearance you know how I was training with Arjuna all day until nightfall? Well... we ventured off near the forbidden forest and ran into a rakshasa. He wasn't trying to attack us. Instead he was motioning us to come closer. We proceeded carefully but he gained our trust quickly. He was an old rakshasa and told us about a god stuck in some well that would reward whoever came to rescue him with eternal life. Arjuna being the heroic man he is asked more about this god and where to find the well."

(Arjuna.
Source: Web)

At this point in the story I can already see confusion in my father face. I pause for a moment and let him speak. "You're saying Arjuna was with you that night at the edge of the forbidden forest and didn't tell anybody?"

I reply, "Well, he actually went into the forest with me. We followed the rakshasa to where the well was. I was a bit surprised that there was actually a well out in the middle of the forest. Arjuna asked what we had to do to save the god and get the reward. The rakshasa told us that many have tried to save the god but none have been successful. Arjuna came up with a plan to save the god. His plan was to unstring our bows at one end and tie the strings together to make a fairly long makeshift rope. He would hold onto his end of the bow on the surface and lower me down into the well while I'm holding my end."

My father interrupts me, "Why on earth would you ever let Arjuna talk you into going into that well? Why the hell did he not tell me anything about this?"

I try to ease my father's frustration, "Father, let me finish my story and then you can ask all your questions."

I continue the story, "As Arjuna was lowering me down into the well the rakshasa we were with interfered and did something to Arjuna. I'm not sure what happened but the next thing I know I'm at the bottom of well and Arjuna is nowhere to be found. This must have been a very old well because there was no water in it, only dry dirt and some rocks. The rakshasa peeked over the side of the well and said he sent my brother home and he wouldn't remember any of this night. Next he placed a cover over the well so that no light was present in the well. I was scared and didn't know what to do. I trembled in fear and go no rest that night."
(The well in the story.
Source: Web)

"The next morning something must have blown or pushed the cover over the well off. When I was finally able to see my surroundings I noticed a hole in the side of the well. At first I wasn't small enough to go through the hole but I was able to make the entrance bigger so I could  fit. I had to crawl on my hands and knees through this hole but when I finally got to the other side it opened into an enormous cave. There were thousands of pointy rocks hanging from the ceiling and coming up from the ground. This large cave was very illuminated, for there was a huge open lava pit in the middle of this cavern."

"I must have been lost in a sense of awe at the sight of this cave because once I finally gathered myself I noticed a man standing right next to me. He had a magnificent looking stone in his hand. This is where things are still fuzzy to me though. I believe he was the great God Shiva and he sent that man to lure me to this cave so he could give me this stone. The reason my memory is still a little fuzzy at this part is because he jammed the stone right into my head and I flinched. As he took his hand off my head he said, "You are now reborn, my son. You will have the power to conquer all. If you so choose so you can even destroy the world.""

(Pointy rocks hanging from the ceiling.
Source: Web)

"When I opened my eyes he was gone. The entrance to the cave was gone. I was stuck in this cave and had to find my own way out. This stone is definitely the reason I survived though. I was never tired or hungry. There were times the lighting in the cave was really dim so I fell onto the pointy rocks on the ground. Instead of ripping right through my body, my body crushed them. It felt like I was in there forever wandering around trying to find my way out."

"After countless days and nights being trapped in this cave I was desperate to escape. The thought of ending it all and jumping in the lava pit became more appealing the more I thought about it. On the evening where I woke up next to the tree was the same night I jumped into the lava pit. I don't know how but I remember jumping into the lava but when my eyes opened again I was leaning against the tree with you and your pupils surrounding me. I have no clue what happened but it seems that maybe when I jumped into the lava is when my memory was taken from me. There's parts that are still fuzzy and I'm still trying to figure out what happened. At least everything isn't a mystery now."

Author's note: I found a source that said Ashwatthaman got his jewel from Shiva when he was born. So in my story he encountered a man he thought was Shiva and he heard him say, "You are now reborn, my son." This is how I follow the actual story of Ashwatthaman gaining his jewel while at the same time having a crazy story behind it.

Reading Notes: The Mahabharata Movie: Part A

This film starts out with a young boy walking around a temple and he ends up running into a man called Vyasa. Vyasa asks if the boy knows how to write and if he could write a poem that he has composed in his head. He claims that the poem is about the boys history and by the end of it he will be different. Ganesha comes in and he ends up being the person to write the poem for Vyasa and the poem ends up being the Mahabharata story.

(Vyasa, Ganesha, and the young boy.
Source: Web)

In this story prince Bhishma is depicted as a black man and the Gods reward him by choosing the time of his death. Bhishma participates in a tournament and is rewarded with three brides. One of them named Amba was upset and claimed to Bhishma that she is bound by love to another man. Bhishma allows her to leave to marry the man she chooses to. Sadly the man she loves, Salva, does not want her anymore. He is scared of Bhishma and doesn't want anything to do with the prize of another man.

Amba comes back to Bhishma and wants him to take her back. Amba claims that Bhishma is responsible for her misery. She vows to be responsible for his death.

King Pandu gets cursed, he can no longer enjoy the pleasures of life and have a son as a result. King Pandu takes his two wives to the top of the Himalayas. But the two wives can tell that he is upset that he cannot have a son with either of the women. Kunti summons the sun god and has a son named Karna with him but remained a virgin. Karna was a strong man but he was somewhat evil because he doesn't know who he really is.

Kunti admits to King Pandu about her mantra to summon any god to impregnate her. She thought King Pandu would be upset but he ends up making her summon a god so that the two can have a child together. I assume he would just raise it as his own. The god that was summoned was Dharma and the child would be named Yudhishthira. Then King Pandu told her to do it again but call upon Vayu, the wind god. The son was named Bhima. Then she does it one more time and call upon Indra and that son is called Arjuna. Kunti tells Madri her mantra and she calls upon Ashwins and ends up having two children named Nakula and Sahadeva.

Duryodana is born and is thought to destroy the Pandava people.
Meanwhile King Pandu is trying to have sex with one of his wives but she knows that he will die if it happens. She said he will have to take her by force but did not put up much of a struggle. She lets him take her and King Pabdu ends up dying before he is even able to kiss her. Madri feels responsible for the kings death and tells Kunti that her sons now belong to her.  Madri follows King pandu into the other world.

This film follows an order. This whole movie is about the young boy, Vyasa, and Genasha writing the poem. When he starts to tell another part of his story it shows the actual scene.

The movie goes forward 20 years and all the children of Bhishma and King pandu are now adults. Drona comes into the scene when they are all fighting and says he will train them all.

Arjuna finally meets Karna. Karna claims to be every bit as good as Karna and even better. Arjuna says he will one day kill Arjuna.

Reading Notes: Nina Paley's, Sita Sings the Blues(Part B)

Part two starts with Nina in New York and Dave emailing her to not return to India. She is heart broken and lets out a loud scream.

The intro to the second part is of a girl dancing with some crazy effects going on around her. Definitely don't recommend someone that is prone to seizures to watch this part. I think it's pretty cool though! Very colorful and trippy. My mom walked in on me while I was watching this part and she gave me a strange look.

Sita reveals that she is pregnant and the people in his kingdom do not respect him because she slept in another mans house. He ends up banishing her to gain the respect of his people. Rama commands his brother to banish his wife, Sita, who is pregnant back to the forest. In the blues song Sita is depicted to be very pregnant and I honestly cannot believe that he would banish her. How is she going to survive? She is going to be so helpless the final weeks of her pregnancy. Even when she does have her babies she is going to be really weak and will probably have trouble keeping herself and the babies alive.

Nina and Sita share something in common. They were sent away and dumped by their lovers who they adored so much. In the next blues song she sings it shows a bunch of animals kissing or intimate things. Then presumably the male leaves and they turn into a blue color just like Sita who is full of sadness.

Sitas children have a teacher that teach them to praise Rama.

Rama encounters his family in the forest and wants his sons to come live with him. Then requests Sita to show his purity. She asks mother earth to take her back in the her womb if she is pure.

Reading Notes: Nina Paley's, Sita Sings the Blues(Part A)

Lakshmi and a phonograph emerge from the ocean on what appears to be lotus flowers. The introduction to this film is very colorful and full of creativity.
The film starts in San Francisco. Presumably the two main characters are a male and a female who seem to be married who own a cat.
The male in the relationship gets a job offer to work in India.
There are some paper cutouts talking about what they know about Indian history. Seems like a typical conversation theses paper cutouts are having. Does not seem scripted at all. I wouldn't be surprised if the producer of this film just had these people talk and then animated what they said.

(Sita Sings the Blues.
Source: Web)

Kaiykei banishes Rama, and Sita decides to go with him. Sita claims that a woman's place is next to her husband and that she cannot live without him.
At about 12 minutes a jazz song starts about Sita and Rama being together. The animation that goes along with the blues song that Sita is singing is pretty cool. It is a style that I have not seen before. To show how strong Rama is, some rakshisas try and kidnap some brahmin and he shows off his archery skillls by killing them all.

Change of scene and the husband is saying goodbye to his wife and heading to India.
The paper cutouts are now having a conversation about Ravana saying all the good/bad things he did. They come to the conclusion that the only bad thing he actually did was steal Sita away from Rama. He is a super devoted follower of Shiva. Ravana has like 9 heads and about 20 arms in his depiction in this film.
Rama chases a magical looking deer and while Rama is away this is when Ravana will jump in to steal Sita.
While Sita is singing a blues song about how she would do anything for her man while Ravana is being a sleazy snake sneaking up on her.

The paper cutouts are now having a conversation about Hanuman. Hanuman is a reincarnation of Shiva and his purpose is to help Rama find Sita. Hanuman is a monkey warrior who is the son of the wind.

When Hanuman goes and visits Sita it depicts when his tail gets caught on fire and he goes around and sets everything on fire pretty well.

Rama and an army of monkeys goes to save Sita. So many people are killed in this battle it shows a river of blood behind Sita while she is singing.

Rama and Sita are reunited and he believes that Ravana and Sita hooked up so Rama doesn't want anything to do with her.

This film follows a cycle where it shows a little scene between the husband and wife. Then the paper cutouts talk about a topic, then that is followed by a blues song with Sita and Rama. All of the scenes follow the same theme then it moves onto the next topic.

Week 10 Storytelling: The Jewel of Power (Part 1)

Ever since I can remember this jewel has been embedded in my forehead keeping me alive from things that would otherwise kill mere mortals. I cannot remember where this jewel came from, but the longer I live the more clearly my memory becomes. For I remember very little prior to when I woke up surrounded by my father and some of his pupils all those moon cycles ago.

(Current Ashwatthaman, recalling where the jewel came from.
Source: Web)

My father found me sleeping against a tree right outside the walls of his beloved training grounds. But when I awoke it was almost as if I was an evil rakshasa to them. They had swords pointed at me and I was in terror. I had no clue what was going on. The only thing I could do was sit still, frozen in fear. For some strange reason I could not recognize them but they definitely knew who I was. The largest of the group said sternly to me, "Ashwatthaman! What is that stone in your head? You have been gone for two moon cycles and when you finally reappear you have a gem embedded into your forehead? Is it really you? Mom is going to be happy to see that you're still alive but what happened to you?"

I replied in a quiet mumble, "What are you talking about? Who are you people?"
The group of men could see I still didn't have my wits about me so they proceeded cautiously. They sheathed their swords but kept one hand on the hilt. The largest man in the group approached me and placed his hands gently on my shoulders and said, "I am your father, Drona. You have been gone for two very long moon cycles and your mother and I have been worried sick. It seems that you are alright. Maybe you are a little traumatized by your time alone in the forbidden forest. We will take you to home and give you some time to rest. Perhaps with some time to rest you will remember what happened."

(Drona(far left) observing as his pupil Arjuna trains. Also this is the tree where Ashwatthaman was found sleeping against.

Drona picked me up and carried me back to the house. I was still confused but felt comfort in the arms of this man who said he was my father. When we got back to the house I was introduced to my mother and she smothered me with hugs and kisses. Next I took a much needed bath. My family tried feeding me when I was all cleaned up but I didn't have an appetite so I proceeded to bed. This night that had begun in terror was ending quite well and I felt like things were going to be alright. But the one thing I couldn't get off my mind was why everyone all night was staring at the stone in my forehead. I ended up falling asleep to the thought of this stone and where it came from.

That night is when the nightmares started and I have been experiencing them ever since. Every night I have the same nightmare of myself deep in a dark cave in the forbidden forest.  In this dream I can feel my forehead tingle where the jewel should be, but for some reason when I put my hand over it all I feel is my skin. It almost feels as if I have lost my mind and I am just following this urge to go deeper into this mysterious cave. As each night passes I go just a little bit deeper. Is this where I was for those two moon cycles? Is this where I got the stone in my head?

(The cave Ashwatthaman dreams about.
Source: Web)

It has now been a couple of years since I have experienced the nightmares that used to plague my existence. I've known the truth of how I ended up in that cave but fear if I tell anybody then it'll just stir more trouble. Yet I have an urging desire to clear everything up with my father who will always love me unconditionally. I have hidden the truth long enough and feel like it is time to reveal to my father what really happened.

"My dear father, Drona, there is something that is eating away at me and I feel like we need to talk about it." I said to my father.

Drona replied, "Are you upset again because it seems like I focus on training the other pupils more than my own son? We have talked about this and.."

Not wanting to go through all this again I interrupt him, "No, this is something more serious. My memories from those two moon cycles I was lost in the forbidden forest have returned. If you want to know what happened I've got an interesting story for you."

My father looked filled with excitement and said, "Oh perfect, now that you've finally gotten your memories back, the mystery of your disappearance can finally be resolved." I didn't have the strength to tell him that my memories had returned a long time ago. I proceeded and acted like the memories had just returned.

Author's Note: Ashwatthaman, the man responsible for the night raid on the Pandava camp, is in possession of some sort of jewel that keeps him alive. Draupadi has asked Yudhishthira to get revenge and kill this man. But since Ashwatthaman is a brahmin, Yudhishthira refuses. Yudhishthira stated that if Ashwatthaman had done something wrong then Vishnu would punish him himself. Since Draupadi's first request was declined she asked him to steal Ashwatthaman's jewel that is embedded in his head and gives him the power to live forever. Arjuna ends up being the one that eventually recovered the jewel.

The thing this story doesn't really reveal is how Ashwatthaman got this powerful jewel. That's where my story comes in. I wrote a story as to how I think the great Ashwatthaman got his jewel of power.

Week 6 Storytelling: Where Did My Mew Go?

In an age unknown to history there existed an ancient civilization off the coast of India known as the Mewsians. The Mewsians were a peaceful race of pink rodent-like creatures that had mastered the art of levitation and honed in on their psychic abilities. They inhabited a large island named Mewsia that was away from the main land containing creatures that would be dangerous to the less developed life elsewhere on the planet. Brahma decided to put all these dangerous creatures on Mewsia because the Mewsians knew how to live alongside them for they were practically invincible. If they were ever in trouble all they had to do was materialize an impenetrable bubble around themselves and fly away to safety. But as time passed the Gods viewed their existence as a threat to the entire world. The Gods could see that the Mewsians had too much power and could one day rival the power of the Gods if they chose to do so.

(A Mewsian in a bubble.

Brahma, the God who created this amazing race, soon realized that the Mewsians must be eliminated in favor of the much weaker race known as the humans.  The humans had limited abilities and the only way they could rival the Gods was by obtaining the weapons only Gods were able to possess. Brahma consulted with Shiva and Vishnu and they all came to the same conclusion that someone needed to take out the Mewsians fearing one day they could be overthrown. With Shiva being the God of destruction he volunteered to be the one who would be responsible for the mass genocide of such a great and peaceful race. Shiva said goodbye to his fellow Gods and the other two could tell he didn't want to kill the Mewsians.

(Gods Shiva, Brahma, and Vishnu.

Shiva quickly reached Mewsia and laid waste to the entire island to get it over with. The Mewsians stood no chance against Shiva and with one fell swoop of his Trishula he killed the entire race. None of the Gods could look upon the horror of what had happened to realize that one had survived the powerful attack. The one remaining Mewsian was known as Mew for he was the King of the Mewsians. Not only was he the King but he was also the most powerful of them all. Shiva knew this information and a part of him couldn't see this entire race be completely taken off the face of the Earth.

Right before Shiva struck the island he warned Mew and commanded him to quickly dig deep into the earth and Shiva would spare him. All Mew had to do to survive was embed his body in the Earth and then use his physic powers to form an impenetrable bubble that not even Shiva would be able to break. A combination of the powerful bubble and the tons of dirt around him protected him from the attack. It all happened so fast and it is believed that in this moment Mew shed the first tear of his long life.

(King Mew's reaction to Shiva's destruction.
Source: Web)

After Shiva laid waste to the land he looked for the one Mewsian he spared. Mew was nowhere to be found and Shiva feared that he killed him by accident. To Shiva's surprise the god Ravana was fleeing the scene and he had Mew with him. Shiva's powers were weak so all he could do was watch as Ravana flew away with the one Mewsian he spared.

Shiva returned to Brahma and Vishnu to tell them that he couldn't live with himself if he killed the entire race so he ended up sparing King Mew. Brahma and Vishnu responded in sync with one another saying, "We understand, Shiva. We know your heart and we knew you couldn't let them all die. We didn't stop you from volunteering because we knew you would get the task done but spare one to come live with us."

In shock Shiva replied, "If you knew all along why did you let me fill myself with such emotions? Yeah, I am the God of Destruction but this civilization has been around just about as long as us. How did you know I was going to spare one of them?"

Brahma and Vishnu ignored his question and again addressed Shiva in sync with one another, "Where is King Mew? We would like to explain ourselves and reward him by giving him even greater power along with supreme knowledge of the cosmos for his troubles."

Shiva was at a loss for words. All he could remember was using all of his power to destroy Mewsia and before he knew it Ravana had stolen Mew right from under his nose. Shiva swiftly relayed this information and the three Gods quickly assembled all the other Gods, Goddesses, gods, and goddesses to track down Ravana as fast as possible. Nobody knew where he was hiding with Mew and hours of searching turned into days, days turned into weeks, and before they realized it a couple months had passed and there were no signs of Mew or Ravana.

Just about all the Gods gave up searching but Shiva and his team were persistent and chose not to stop until Mew was found. Along their travels searching they came across the bird God, Garuda. Apparently he was never informed that the Gods were searching for King Mew or the evil Ravana. Garuda had seen Ravana with Mew and he was taking him in a southern direction. Shiva knew there was only one island out there and it was the Island of Lanka. At last Shiva knew Mew's exact location and he was finally recovered.

(Garuda in this story is the Legendary Pokemon Ardicuno.
Source: Web)

In the possession of the Gods he was rewarded with immense power, knowledge, and even immortality. It is believed that the great God Mew is even alive to this day, doing his best to stay out of the way of the humans yet protecting them at the same time. For when the Gods gave Mew the power of a God he became the peacekeeper and protector of the world.

Author's Note: No blog would be complete for me unless my favorite pokemon, Mew, was featured in one of my stories. I took the story where the monkey people help Rama search for Ravana and Sita. Instead of Ravana stealing Sita away from Rama he stole Mew away from the Gods. Just as everyone is losing hope about finding their target there is an encounter with a bird/bird person. In the original story it was the bird Sampati who knew where Sita was taken. I couldn't really find a way to integrate him into my story so instead I used Garuda because he is the god of the birds. I used a little bit of pokemon lore and decided to have Mew alive to this very day. In the anime he is only seen a couple times and is the most legendary Pokemon in the first generation series. This is why decided to make him a God at the end.

Week 3 Storytelling: Viradha

There was once a noble prince named Roger. Roger was handsome and everyone in the kingdom couldn't wait for him to assume his father's position as king. However, King Joffrey had other plans. Joffrey was going to do anything in his power as king in order to ensure his future on the throne. He didn't exactly know what his plans were but it was certain that he wasn't going to give up his throne easily.

The king was walking to his chambers one night when he came into contact with an evil nameless witch. Instead of calling for the guards to assist him he approached the witch. The witch could see the greed in the king's heart and used this greed for her own advantage. She knew exactly what the king desired and made a deal with the king. The deal that the witch proposed was eternal life. In return all she wanted to do was serve her king for eternity. Without hesitation the king quickly pounced on the opportunity to rule until the end of time. The witch told the king that the next time the land starts to shake that she would be able to use the mysterious power of the earth and transfer that power to give the king eternal life.

(King Joffrey in this story.
Source: Web)

A few years passed and there were no earthquakes. The king was growing old and his time left alive was waiting in frustration. Everyone in King Joffrey's kingdom despised the king and couldn't wait for his son Roger to take over. On one night where there was a full moon the earth finally shook. The king ordered the witch to perform her ritual and give him eternal life. The witch remembered clearly what the king desired and gave him exactly what he wanted. Startled by the earth shaking, Roger ran to his father's chamber to make sure his father was alright. But when he got to his father's chamber he noticed the witch speaking in a language he had never heard before. He didn't think much of it and just stayed close by to see what was happening.

At the climax of the ritual Roger heard his father screaming and then the screams faded away almost like he was falling out the window. Roger rushed in to find his father standing in stone and the witch laughing. Roger demanded to know what happened and could not get any answer. Overwhelmed with emotions, Roger drew his sword and charged towards the evil witch. In a panic the witch tried to cast the same spell upon Roger to turn him into stone too. She was hurried so much that she didn't exactly know what spell she cast upon him. Roger plunged his sword into the witch's stomach and quickly threw her of out the window with the sword still embedded into her body. As she was falling all you could hear was screaming. Right before the evil witch struck the ground she yelled, "ONLY RAMA CAN SAVE YOU NOW!" Roger had no clue what she was talking about and could only stand there speechless at what had just happened to his father.

A couple minutes passed. Roger finally gathered himself and used this time to say farewell to his father by stating, "Is this what you imagined what eternal life would be like? I don't know if you're still in there but I promise I will clean up the family name and in a hundred years people will forget the horrid things you did. People will remember that you were my father and I will do my best every day to let the people know you were hard on the kingdom because you didn't want to see it fall into ruin like our neighboring kingdoms. You understood that power trumps compassion as a ruler, yet I will show you what a compassionate king is capable of."

In the next weeks Roger could see his body changing from a human into a demon and had no clue what was happening. He locked himself in his chamber and didn't let anyone come near him because he feared they would jump to conclusions. His worst fear came true and all members of the Kingsgurd barged into his chamber. They had never seen a creature like Roger and didn't even know it was him. In terror the guards drew their swords and began relentlessly stabbing Roger. To Roger's surprise the weapons had no effect on him. He filled with rage and brutally killed every guard in that room and outside his door with nothing more than his bare hands. Not knowing what to do, the final words the witch spoke had stuck in his mind ever since his dad was turned to stone. Convinced that he must find someone named Rama he jumped out the window and ran to the dense forest slaying anyone who tried to stop him. He quickly realized that whatever curse the witch had put on him resulted in him being turned into a demon that was seemingly invincible to all mortal weapons.

This is what Roger in this story looks like after the curse.)

Author's Notes: This story was derived from the story titled "Viradha." Basically the rakshasa named Viradha takes Sita and Rama ends up having to kill him. Viradha has a curse on him where weapons can't kill him and Rama was destined to free him from his curse. The story didn't really say how he got the curse so I made up my own story as to how he obtained this strange curse. In my story Roger is Viradha, and the witch is the person who gave him the curse. King Joffrey is a Game of Thrones reference because that was the name of an evil and corrupt king in that series. The main purpose of this story is to inform the reader the way I like to believe this man got his curse. I used Roger in this story because I am a fan of American Dad and it just seems right to have an alien represent someone who is supposed to be a demon.

Reading Notes: Devdutt Pattanaik Videos, Part C: Ardhanari's Secret

God is never limited to one form. The male trinity is composed of  Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer. While the female trinity is composed of Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Shakti, who represent wealth, knowledge, and power. The male trinity is associated with verbs and the female trinity is associated with nouns. The Gods are doing things while the Goddesses are passive. The Gods are within all of us while the Goddesses are around us. Gods are used for the the spiritual subject and the Goddesses are used for the material object.

Goddesses do not judge people so anyone can pursue the traits they represent. Gods on the other hand do judge people and they create, sustain, and destroy society. Goddesses help us appreciate the serene and silent soul within us, God.
Red is the color of potential energy, and green is the color of realized energy. The earth is red before it rains, and it is green after is rains when all the seeds burst into life. This is why certain Gods and Goddesses are dressed wearing certain colors.
(Half male half female God.

The Indian culture is comfortable with the female sexuality and convey some of their Gods as females. While other religions around the world shun the idea of having a female God. Without God and Goddess their is neither.

Reading Notes: Devdutt Pattanaik Videos, Part B:Narayan's Secret

The world comes into existence when Narayan wakes up, and when Narayan sleeps the world does not exist. He sleeps on a ocean of milk where all things will emerge from when he wakes up. The milk represents possibilities, there is no form. He sleeps on Sesha, and when Narayan sleeps time is still. Since Narayan is the observer, whenever he sleeps he isn't observing the world so the world does not exist when he is sleeping. Narayan's awakening is a celebration.
When Narayan is awake he is known as Vishnu. Garuda is Vishnu's mount.

Death is a comma. Meaning that death does not show the end but just a pause.
Narasimha is a form of Narayan, showing that anything is possible. It is believed that Narasimha has the ability to destroy the world but Lakshmi intervenes to sooth the beast and remind him who he really is.
Every human is a God they just haven't realized it yet because we are too caught up with the rules of this world.

Week 7 Story Planning: Ashwattaman's Jewel

The war is over and the whole Mahabharata is very similar to The Game of Thrones. It doesn't matter if you love a character or not every person in the story is expendable.

Ashwattaman does a very terrible thing and raids a Pandava camp at night. The earlier fighting scenes talk about how everyone seems to follow the rules of battle. In example, when Arjuna and Karna were fighting, Arjuna's bowstring broke and he pleaded that Karna allow him to re-string it. Also the wheel on Karna's car got stuck in the mud and he pleaded a cease fire too until the elements of the battle are even. Then when Bhima struck Duryodhana below the waist everyone was mad.
(Jewel.
Source: Web)

But here is Ashwattaman, he has lost and has nothing else to lose and decides to enter a camp at night which is surely against the rules of battle. He ends killing all of Draupadi's children and she demands vengeance.  They don't see a need to kill him so instead they take the Jewel from his head that is believed to keep him from hunger, thirst, and poison.

It would be cool to find out where this jewel came from. This could be a story idea. An adventure that follows Ashwattaman in a forest and him having to complete some task/kill some god in order to get this jewel that is magical. The possibilities for this story are endless. All I know is that I want to write some cool story as to where Ashwattaman got this jewel that is so powerful.

Reading Notes:Krishna and His Army, Part C

With a battle inevitable both Arjuna and Duryodhana seek the help of Krishna to assure victory for their side. They both arrive on the same day and wait for Krishna to wake up to ask for help. Duryodhana asks for help first and claims that since he asked first the Krishna must help him. But Krishna set her eyes on Arjuna first and says that she will help both instead of just one. Krishna gave them the option between an army of 10 crores or to have Krishna on their side but she wouldn't battle. Arjuna got the first choice because he was younger and he chose to have Krishna fight on his side because he seems to be in love with her. Duryodhana is happy that he took Krishna who wouldn't be helpful over the large army.

Reading Notes:The Burning of the Forest, Part B

A brahmin named Agni was hungry but had a hunger that couldn't be satisfied by any ordinary food. Agni is the god of fire and the only way he sees to satisfy his hunger is to consume an entire forest. He approaches Arjuna and Krishna and promises celestial weapons if they help him consume the forest. They agree and all they have to do is stop Indra from putting out the flames. Arjuna receives a bow that has infinitely many arrows in the quiver along with a chariot full of weapons. While Krishna receives a mace and a discus. Only 6 people survive this great battle but Agni is satisfied and shines bright with delight.

A good story idea from this story would be the actual battle between Indra and Agni/Arjuna/Krishna. Only 6 things were able to survive this great forest fire so it must have been a pretty epic fire(battle?).

A princess named Amba refuses to marry Bhishma's brother because she already has a prior engagement to the king of the Shalwas. When she gets back home she discovers that the king no longer wants her because he was bested in combat. She doesn't want to go back to Bhishma so she just does her own thing and blames Bhishma for her troubles. She stops eating, taking care of herself, and spends days just staring at nothing. Shiva jumps in to offer assistance and she wants revenge on Bhishma. Shiva grants this boon and Amba will be the one to kill Bhishma but in another life. She jumps in a fire and waits to be incarnated into a fierce male warrior that will end up killing the man who ruined her life.

A story that immediately comes to mind from this story would be a Pokemon that is stolen from his trainer. When the Pokemon is able to escape his and go home the original owner no longer wants him so he gets all depressed. Then a legendary Pokemon comes in and sees that he is sad and asks whats wrong. The weak Pokemon demands an evolution so that he can get revenge.

Shiva is the destroyer of worlds and can destroy the world by simply closing his eyes. He is a God, while his wife Shakti(Pavati?) is a Goddess, and their children Ganesha and ____ are gods. Shiva and his wife are more important so their title of God is capitalized while their children are lowercase.
Images are windows into a cultures soul.

Four goals of life represented by Veda's 4 heads.
-Dharma(Righteous conduct)
-Artha(Economic activity)
-Kama(Pleasurable pursuits)
-Moksha(Spiritual practices)

Vishnu - a God who is  wed to two Goddesses, Shri the Godddess of wealth, and Bhu, the Goddess of earth.

This video goes through a bunch of random gods and goddesses I have never heard of and talks about how images/shrines depict them. It is a bit confusing because it is fast paced but about 8-12 gods/goddesses are talked about.

Ganesha represents power and a power to move obstacles. He represents a life full of power and prosperity. He got the elephant head because his father Shiva cut it off when he wouldn't let him in the house to see his mother. Balance between a mortal body and a immortal head which is permanent.

Divine is both abstract and concrete.

Feedback Focus

Today I learned some techniques on how to stay focused while reading. The technique I found most helpful was copy-and-delete, followed by reading out loud, and using a timer came in last. I liked the copy-and-delete technique the most because after every paragraph I wrote down some notes. By the time I was done reading I had a document that had the entire story summarized very simply even if I didn't quite understand the story. This technique will surely be used when I'm reading other students stories. By the time I'm done reading and want to leave a comment I can just look at my notes and remember all the things that stuck out to me.
The next technique I used was reading out loud. This technique wasn't as effective as the previous but still seemed more effective than reading in my head. Whenever I had to read it out loud I felt like I had to talk clearly and concisely so the listener could understand me. At the same time the words were slowly being absorbed into my brain unlike normal reading.

The last technique was to use a timer. I did not experience any sort of positive effect with this one. Whenever I set the 10 minute timer it just seemed like I was focusing on when I could stop reading instead of the reading itself. I will not be using this technique for any readings in this class.

Week 4 Story Planning: Lets Go Find Mew!

I kind of already did some story planning in my Part C notes for Sampati. My notes from the story about Sampati are below and the story planning is below the image. I was probably ready to go ahead and write this story but time is very limited due to coding projects and sleep seems more appealing to me than stressing over writing a good story.

Most of the soldiers that Sugriva sent out to look for Sita are finally returning. Sadly the soldiers that are returning are the ones that were send to the north, east and west. Then it is revealed that the people that were sent to the south do in fact have information about Sita. The monkeys and bears that were searching for Sita were talking about Jatayu and the bird person Sampati just happens to hear the name and listens in. Turns out that Sampati is Jatayu's brother and he wants to hear of the news about his brother. It is sad that his brother died trying to save Sita from Ravana but Sampati saw exactly where the evil king Ravana took her. He points them in the directing and goes on his way.
(Sampati - The bird on the left)
This story stuck out to me because all these people are searching everywhere for Sita but have no clue where to look. It would be easy to turn this story into my own and turn the target into a super rare Pokemon. Or make it like a murder mystery and they're searching everywhere for the killer with little leads. Then the people looking for the target just happen to run into someone who knows their exact location.
(My best Pokemon card. The Legendary Pokemon Mew!
Source: me)
If I do go the route where the target is a super rare Pokemon I will for sure choose the legendary Pokemon Mew. The people hunting down the Pokemon will be searching forever and some random person will somehow know his exact location. The entire goal of my story is to finally find this Pokemon that has run away in fear of its life. In my story the reason this pokemon is so rare is because the humans hunted them into extinction and this is the last one. The humans have plans to use this last Mew to somehow get the species back on the map.

Reading Note: Valkimi's Hermitage, Part D

Everything is finally going back to the way it was due to Rama and Sita returning after their 14 year exile. Rama takes the throne and everyone in his kingdom doesn't trust Sita's twin boys to actually be Rama's. The people know that Sita was captured by Ravana and everything thinks that Sita is no longer pure and innocent. They think her children are not conceived by Rama. Sadly Rama listens to his subjects and puts Sita in exile with the children. However, a good amount of time passes and Rama runs into these two children and thinks they look like him. He asks who their mother is and they say Sita. This is where you find out he messed up by not giving her a chance and listening to the people.

I do not have much of a story idea yet but this story was the most interesting to me.

Reading Notes: Sampati, Part C
